John Dimmick - our new language assistant
Who's John?
John Dimmick is a recent college graduate from Indianapolis, Indiana, USA who will be spending the entire school year at Gymnasium Bad Waldsee as an English teaching assistant.
John graduated from Valparaiso University in May 2009 with degrees in history and graphic design. Though he did not major in German language in college, he studied the language for several years in primary school. He also spent 4 months living in Germany in 2007 as an exchange student at Hochschule Reutlingen.
John’s interests include reading, watching baseball, listening to music and traveling.
Where can you meet John?
John will be involved in the English studio for Years 8-11. He'll also be coming along to some of your English lessons.
You can also try to catch him in the breaks (he's usually in the teachers' staffroom) if you have any questions or problems with your English or suggestions for activities with John.

Meet John for a conversation class every Tuesday, 15.40 in room 110.

English Books
The English books we bought for our school library have been removed and will be available in the new "Mediothek" after the grand opening on October 9 and 10!
There are books in three different levels.
- original English teenage fiction - some of them easy to read, some more difficult. These are basically for Year 10 upwards, but some of them are suitable for younger students, too. (Try it out: we've had students in Year 8, our test readers, who read them and understood them. AND liked them!) If a book is too difficult for you, just bring it back and try again next year! 
- Cambridge English Readers level 2 for Year 8
- Cambridge English Readers level 3 for Year 9

Fiona
Good-bye, Fiona!
Fiona was our English Language Assistant in Gymnasium Bad Waldsee. She has now returned to Britain to continue her M.A. German and Theological Studies at the University of St. Andrews.
We are grateful to have had her here with us. Fiona was helping us out in a lot of ways. There were conversation lessons with pupils from different years, and some classes learned Scottish dances while Fiona was staying with us. She was definitely a gain for our students, who are missing her. We wish her all the best for her studies and future career and hope to see her again one day.

General Information
Students learn to understand, speak, read and write the English language. The aim is that - after a certain time - students will be able to communicate in English in everyday situations. They learn to understand and write different kinds of texts. Of course, students get to know various aspects of the British and American history and culture.
We work with Klett's Green Line and Green Line NEW.

Basketballspieler trainiert Schüler
Jumping Joe
Unter dem Titel „Balling under control“ hat der amerikanische Basketballspieler Joe Asberry das Gymnasium Bad Waldsee besucht. Er veranstaltete am 15.12.2008 eine Basketball-Einheit in seiner Muttersprache Englisch und sprach anschließend über jugendrelevante Themen wie Gewalt, Sucht und Drogen.

The Big Challenge
Every year, students in Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 can take part in the Big Challenge competition. The next competition is taking place on May 6th, 2010. You will be informed in class before you have to put down your name for the next competition. If you want to practice, please follow the link in this text, it will lead you to the Big Challenge homepage.
Für die Fünftklässler auf deutsch: Liebe Fünfer, wenn ihr am Big Challenge teilnehmen wollt, dann wartet, bis Euch euer Englischlehrer über die Anmeldung informiert. Normalerweise müsst Ihr Euch bis Mitte Januar anmelden und eine Einverständniserklärung der Eltern abgeben. Wenn ihr den Link oben im Text anklickt, kommt ihr auf die Homepage des Wettbewerbs, wo ihr auch Übungsaufgaben machen könnt, um mit der Art der Fragen vertraut zu werden. Viel Spaß!

Firstly, you can watch some cool films online - two English girls meet two German boys in Cologne. The English girls don't speak any German - and the Germans' English is - ok. This causes some funny misunderstandings....
Secondly, there's also a link to a "Wissenspool" and there you can play the "Flirt English" game. I tried it out - it's fun.
You should be at least in Year seven to understand most of the dialogues.By the way: the newest film is on top, "Goodbye" is, of course, the last one, and "New in Cologne" is the first one. So if you want to watch them, start with the one at the bottom.

Der British Council betreibt diese kostenlose Seite für alle, die Englisch lernen und unterrichten. Dabei können sowohl fortgeschrittene Lerner als auch Anfänger auf verschiedene Angebote zugreifen, getreu dem Motto "fun English practice for everyone." In der Anfängerkategorie finden sich Spiele, Lieder, Geschichten und Aktivitäten um zum Beispiel die "skills" Hören, Lesen und Schreiben zu trainieren.

Eine absolut empfehlenswerte Seite für alle, die sich über aktuelle Themen informieren wollen, denen aber die BBC News sprachlich noch zu anspruchsvoll sind. Die World News for Children kann man anhören und gleichzeitig das Skript nachlesen - ideal, wenn man das Hörverstehen trainieren möchte.
